***Trigger Warning - rape, rape culture***
TERM CREATED FOR SHOCK VALUE MAKES INTERNET WAVES:
The term is “Birth Rape.”
The earliest usage of the phrase I can find appears to be nearly 8 years old.
In June of 2007 it was listed in Urban Dictionary.
I, however, am just now hearing it.
I find it sickening.
Please, do NOT get me wrong; it is deplorable that medical professionals may perform unneeded procedures against the will of a patient (regardless of that patient’s gender, or what the procedure may be).
However, the word “rape” should not be used in this manner. And for the record, I do mean USED. I feel that whomever coined the phrase did it very purposefully. They found something horrific (medical malpractice), and therefore USED the most horrific word they could find when describing it, only to ensure that the world would find it equally horrific.
Congratulations, you picked the right word for your purpose.
As I write this, I am struggling to come up with ANYTHING as equally horrid and vile as rape. Therein lies my problem with this “new” term; it dilutes what rape is, and the trauma that goes hand-in-hand with it. Anti-rape activist Sandy Brindley says: “Rape is so particularly traumatic and so meaningful in so many ways, that there’s something about using the word in other contexts that diminishes the reality of it, and the impact it has on women’s lives.”
She is right.
It is not a word to be USED to advance your own agenda and issues.
It is not a subject to be joked about.
It is not an act that should be watered down within society through creative wordplay.
It is a CRIME.
Again, to do so belittles what rape is, and belittles the hell that a survivor endures afterward. And, shame on you for doing so.
As a husband, a father, and a man, I find it deplorable.
Anyone who is willing to do such a thing, has never seen someone they love struggle through that darkness…a darkness from which not all escape.
To all the victims/survivors/prevailers of sexual abuse: I will not diminish what you have suffered/endured/overcome.
